Content Description

This addition to the MSS 10973, John D. Casey papers, a Professor of English at the University of Virginia from 1972 to 2017, contains papers compiled between 1972 and 2015. It includes his personal notes on his publications, manuscript copies of his books, edited manuscripts of other authors’ work, letters to publishers, fan mail addressed to Casey, and correspondence with former students. Annotated manuscripts of Casey’s Spartina, the winner of the National Book Award in 1989, and Beyond the First Draft, published in 2014, are included. Also present is correspondence between Casey and Breece D’J Pancake. Pancake was a short story author who studied under Casey in the University of Virginia’s creative writing master’s program in the late 1970s. Many of Casey's notebook pages in this collection and some correspondence are photocopied from their originals. The originals may be in other parts of the collection held at the Small Special Collection.
