Content Description
This addition to MSS 10553, American Rhododendron Society Records, includes correspondence, memos, articles, meeting minutes, membership lists, reports, newsletters, photographs, slides, film, cassettes, and tapes documenting the American Rhododendron Society (A.R.S.), particularly its Middle Atlantic Chapter (M.A.C.) and Editorial Committee, and Le-Mac Nurseries, an azalea nursery in business from 1927 to 2004 in Hampton, Virginia, that shipped azaleas, rhododendrons, and other plants to destinations in the eastern U.S. The business was run by Kenneth McDonald Jr. and Sandra McDonald, members of A.R.S. Two folders relate to M.A.C. minutes and board material, one folder about the University of Virginia's site on Dr. Henry T. Skinner site, a specialist in the native Eastern rhododendrons and azaleas, and six folders of A.R.S. Editorial Committee material. The Middle Atlantic Chapter materials include emails, some to and from Sandra McDonald, a memorandum, meeting minutes, membership lists, financial reports, plant lists, and reports. The Editorial Committee includes materials on the Journal of the American Rhododendron Society (JARS) collection, including correspondence, editor's note, research grant template, and a published journal article by John M. Hammond. The Le-Mac Nurseries portion contains correspondence letters with, but not limited to, Kenny Hammock and Dr. Thomas Wheelon. As well as the "Azaleas" newsletter, newspaper clippings, invoices, membership lists, species lists, flower listings, nursery certifications, a visitor's guide, descriptive histories, American Association of Nurserymen tribute forms for several of Le-Mac Nurseries staff, and a biographical description of Kenneth McDonald. Affiliations with the Virginia Nurseries Association (V.N.A.) are mentioned. There are also many photographs, many of which are annotated. These include color and black and white prints, slides, polaroids, panoramas, and aerial photographs documenting the early days of Le-Mac Nurseries circa 1921 to the nursery's final days in 2004. These include pictures of Kenneth McDonald Senior and Junior, other Le-Mac Nurseries employees, plant sales, anniversaries, construction, and photographs of plants and plant measurements. Also included are film reels, an open real audiotape, and an audiocassette from 1937 to 1983 documenting Le-Mac Nurseries. The content of these materials is unknown.
