Gamma Chi Omega chapter records
Content Description
This collection contains records from the Gamma Chi Omega chapter of West Virginia of the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority. Included are invitations to sorority events, programs for events and meetings, financial reports, lists of members, agendas, conference reports and programs, press releases, etiquette manuals, letters from members, issues of "News-O-Gram," a mimeographed newsletter produced by the chapter, a 1981 issue of "Ivy Leaf" the Alpha Kappa Alpha magazine, and a charm. Several of the items provide insight into the chapter's involvement in the Civil Rights movement, including a press release printing the speech given by Lyndon Johnson before signing into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, stamped "courtesy of public relations committee Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority;" a press release from the 41st National Convention of Alpha Kappa Alpha which featured Martin Luther King Jr. as a speaker, and a 1964 issue of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Daily Reporter, with an article about a speech Martin Luther King Jr. gave to a sorority meeting the night before ("Dr. King urged the sorors to develop a massive program to get rid of poverty") among other items.
