Thomas Kern mathematics exercise book
This collection contains a mathematics exercise book from the mid-1800s belonging to Thomas Kern. The notebooks contains exercises and solutions for simple mathematics concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Towards the end of the notebook, two pages contain longer writings of a religious nature written by Kern. The headings of each page contain many calligraphic flourishes and ornate touches. It is unclear if Kern was enrolled in a school or if this was his own independent learning.
Gift of Leora Sheridan Vincenti, 4 October 2018. The notebook was found in the old ice house walls of the Brown Family home, the Mount Fair estate located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, during a renovation project in the 1980s.
