This collection contains the correspondence of Callender St. George Noland who served in the U.S. Navy from 1834 to 1854. The collection contains approximately 145 letters covering much of his career in the U.S. Navy. The bulk of the collection is correspondence to Mary Edmonia Berkeley Noland, his wife, and other relatives. They relate to family and social matters as well as his thoughts and observations on domestic and world events. They also describe his service including shore duty in Portsmouth and Norfolk, Virginia, Philadelphia, his time in Washington D.C., and his service on various ships which include: Revenue Cutter Gallatin- Chamber of Commerce Resolution 1837, USS Saratoga 1845, USS Potomac 1846, USS Steamer 1847, USS Steamer Princeton 1847-1849, USS Bibb 1850. The letters are arranged into fifteen folders. They are arranged chronologically and then by topic, generally the service on a particular ship. There are sticky notes on many of the letters with additional information pertaining to the specific letter.
